If you like funk, rock, progressive, humor, or talented musicians putting their all out on the table for you then get this album. If you have never listened to Geo's music before prepare to be perplexed. On my first listen I loved a few songs, hated a few, and wasn't sure what several were talking about. At first listen this is a very good album. If you have followed Geo, listen to the Geologic Podcast, listen to any science or skepticism podcasts, have ever considered the fairness/unfairness of the universe, like bizarre animals, enjoy sick drums or basslines, sing along, think current pop music is bland, or are a generally scientific or skeptical person you will find many "easter eggs" that push Geo's work over the top! Remember 49% of humans are of below average intelligence, listening to George Hrab is guaranteed to improve your mind by at least 5% (references to follow).

Hey Paul,

Thanks for the great interview. Charlie Stross is one of my favorite authors.

Strange coincidence -- the one and only time I've been to MD I bought my first Charlie Stross book in the Greetings and Readings bookshop right near the Hunt Valley Marriot.

Good to see one of the OG podcasts still going strong!

As I have revisited this today, in thinking about upcoming Balticon 42, there were a couple of clarifications I want to make to the interview. (I'll blame it on it being the last day of an exhausting con at the time of recording ;) ):

1. I completely left out talking about the whole alcohol hand-gel concept - as opposed to anti-bacterial soap, those do work, and kill via direct toxic effect on bacteria and viruses... much in the same way that bleach does. Speaking of which:

2. There are several varieties of bacteria that are resistant to bleach's killing effects. Fortunately, none of them have caused any significant disease in humans as of yet. Here, I mean "bleach" as in some strong dilution of a pure bleach solution. There are bacteria in hospitals that do cause human disease that have developed the ability to subsist, and thrive, in various cleaning solutions, but these are not typically composed of pure bleach.

See you in a few days!

Thanks for investigating this. It seems that the dangers may be exaggerated, but that publishers are unwilling to be called to defend their authors in the event of a claim (naturally so). The FAQ at Chilling Effects is indeed useful but was presumably written before the development of Creative Commons.

FanFic would appear to be the ideal application for Creative Commons licensing, though publishers are hardly likely to take CC on board given their leary attitude to anything that might necessitate a lawsuit, especially as CC hasn't been sufficiently tested in court.

FROM: Carry The Lawyer

Paul:

As I guessed, there are a few resources on the subject. The one I recommend is the FAQ by www.chillingeffects.org. It's a great little primer, outlines much of what we talked about last night (but doesn't include the Gone with the Wind ref I discussed), and includes a little more on the trademark angle.

http://www.chillingeffects.org/fanfic/faq.cgi

A thing I wanted to mention: Slavish copying was a bit of a misstatement -- its better to say, copying of a character that is uniquely original to the story ( e.g., Spock from Star Trek, Harry Potter). Note: There is no protection for "stock" characters (the gay best friend, or the girl next door), even if you slavishly copy them. These are the characters I discussed as 'archetypes.'

I spoke to Carry last night. She's an IP/Copyright lawyer. Basically, She says that PaulJ is correct. That ideas can't be copyrighted and that an author would have to slavishly copy a work in order to be open to a successful law suit. However, anyone can sue for anything, and that might be the crux of the matter.

I've been thinking about this a lot and really wondering about the source of the information. I have two theories on this:
1) Lawyers at various publishing firms have been telling authors that reading fan fic about their work, and interacting with fans could possibly open them up to law suits. While this is true, it is not likely. It is even less likely that the law suits would be successful. But if they occur, they would still be a loss of time, energy, and money for the author and the publisher.
2) There is dogma in the industry that is passed between the various employees of publishing houses, agents, and authors. The idea that something could happen to an author if they interact with fans or fan fic authors permeates the culture. And although there is very little likelihood of it happening, maybe even less than getting hit by a bus while crossing the street, the authors are convinced by the dogma that they should not step off this curb.

I liken number 2 to The Monkey Experiment. No one really knows why they tell others not to do something, they heard it and believed it. I think maybe it's time for the dogma to end and for people to do real risk evaluation on this.

My advice, if you really want to interact with your fans and read their fan fic, talk to a copyright lawyer. Find out how many law suits of this type have ever been filed, what it would cost to fight one if some jerk did file one, and what the possible legal outcome would be.

I see no fault in being risk averse. But it seems to me as though some people are risk averse for the sake of the thing. Risk assessment requires some time and some thought. In this case, the upside is a tighter bond with your fans. Only you can decide if it's worth it to you.

Also listen to this Conestoga Podcast and read my comments in the article for another example of how some authors seem to not really understand the issues around copyright.

Fascinating to hear Naomi Novik's concerns about being sued for using her fans' ideas. But I thought 'ideas' as such couldn't be copyrighted.

If a fan wanted to sue an author for plagiarism, that fan would have to show that the _words_ and not just the ideas had been copied. But I am not a lawyer. How about interviewing someone who could give a definitive answer on this?

Shelly,

Thanks for posting to the corrections thread. Just to be clear I probably did say that there were 3000 people or something close to it, and on that account I was wrong.

We appreciate you putting in a correction in the next issue. Is there any chance the correction will include a link to our podcast website?

Chris,

I disagree. Most of the media went nuts over the headline, that TMPotY was "You". But the "You" they were talking about is us. The creators and consumers of new media. I think they recognized this as the first time in history anyone could publish their own works to the world and gain an appreciable audience. I see the media's reaction as one typical to the gate keepers of old media. They made their money by controlling access to the audience, and they see it slipping away.

If I were protecting my pools and yachts I would draw attention to the headline and deliberately misinterpret the whole point of TMPofY, just like most major media did.

As for TMPotY 2007 being THEM!, I don't want to see not giant ants at Balticon. They are not on the guest list. They are not allowed in. If they show up we will throw berserkers and gophers at them until they leave.

Hope you'll be there to spend time with Mike & Evo too. Make sure to bring Mellissa with you.

Hey there, Paul ! Really interesting - especially for the dormant SF geek in me (it's kinda hard to find English reading matter in Taiwan).

Talking of gear, I'm looking at the brand new Zoom H4 to replace my minidisk for field recordings - I'm really bummed that I can't transfer recordings from my 3 year old MD digitally. The H4 is not as stealth as your rig, but it can record 24-bit/96 kHz wavs - great for music production.

I used an iRiver IFP-799 solid state MP3 player/recorder with an external microphone from Giant Squid Audio Labs.

Steve Eley from Escape Pod turned me on to the Giant Squid. It's a great mic for the iRiver and similar devices. The mic has 2 omni heads on 6' long cables. Each head has a clip so it can be attached to stuff.

I stuffed the excess cable into my shirt, then clipped one mic on the guest while keeping the other mic for myself. The iRiver was strapped to my upper arm with the sports strap that comes with it. The rig is very stealth, it's hard to see in person, let alone in pictures. You can see a picture of the rig here.

Thanks for mentioning me our podcast, but I'm in Oklahoma not Kansas. I know there isn't a whole lot of difference between the two states. I'm not offended by the mistake. I would have been offended if you said I was in Texas ;-). Anyway, the sound quality of this podcast was excellent, and overall a good podcast.

Sweet! I usually get out to Phoenix a few times a year. I'd love to get some more pics of Harris Hawks. I love Harris Hawks, they are known to hunt in family groups and I'd love to get some pictures of that.

Thanks C.A.

You, cold filthy bastard.
I was hanging on every second of the interview loving it. I had already paused and called my wife, to ask her to listen and then you ended it agh....... I can't wait until the next cast. BTW if you are interested next time you are in Phoenix, AZ give me a heads up. I have a line on an active group of what I think are Harris Hawks, which live around my neighborhood. I think they are Harris Hawks because I have seen them pack hunting. One hawk skimming the ground and the other circling high above stooping on the spooked prey.

Good interview. I'm tempted to find one of those 3m dishes, though I'm not sure Melissa would let me put it in the backyard. But I know someone who would be very tempted to actually put up a SETI dish in their backyard.

The transition to the commercials was better, but still a little abrupt. You might put a longer pause between them or simply insert a "we'll be right back."

Hello, I can't find an email for feedback, so I'll leave a comment here.

First of all, any chance you could put up a link to the 2006 Nebula Awards Weekend in Tempe, AZ, May 4-7, 2006. Connie Willis is Toastmaster, and SFWA will be honoring Harlan Ellison as Grand Master and William F. Nolan as Author Emeritus. We're expecting a good number of other SF/F authors and editors to be on hand for the festivities. Full details are at http://www.sfwa.org/awards/2006 . We're working on getting Michael and Evo involved and seeing this site has got me thinking of maybe getting something set up so we can have a who bunch of interview podcasts come out of the event.

Thanks,

Lee Whiteside
