Promo: 7th Son: Descent

J.C. Hutchins has released a newly rerecorded version of what was originally a podcast only novel. The novel is now in print and available from St. Martin's Press. Buy the book now from Amazon and help an author who has given so much to the podcasting community.

Music: Drive Away by Matthew Ebel

Matthew contacted me via Twitter to see if he could play his original music at Balticon 44. While I took a crash course in listening to his music, he reviewed his schedule for 2010. I liked what I heard, and given his dedication to New Media it seemed like a great fit. Unfortunately, he had a conflict, so he's penciled us in for 2011. In the mean time, dig the music, and check out the artist if it sounds as good to you as it does to me.</itunes:summary>

This is the audio from a panel I spoke on at Balticon 43 over Memorial Day weekend. A special thanks to my fellow panelists: PG Holyfield, Scott Sigler, and MAinPA.
I believe that this was the first panel I was on during the weekend, and was chosen as ldquo;moderatorrdquo; on the spot without having any notes or talking points to go from. Luckily, we all talk a lot, so there wasnrsquo;t a lack of content

From the Balticon program:

Upgrading your gear is a serious temptation. In these trying economic times, bargains abound and the desire for some new shiny device in your studio sometimes outweighs the other factors in your life. Our panel of technophiles talk about whatrsquo;s out there, where to buy it cheap, and when you should buy it. We all love our gear, but we shouldnrsquo;t deprive our families of food and shelter for the next new gadget.</itunes:summary>

This is the audio from a panel I spoke on at Balticon 43 over Memorial Day weekend. A special thanks to my fellow panelists: Thomas lsquo;Cmdlnrsquo; Gideon, Dan the Fan.

The version I am posting is not edited for content, but has been processed to remove noise and (hopefully) make it more listenable.
Cmdln has posted his own recording from this panel at Archive.org in uncompressed FLAC, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis formats.
From the Balticon program:
This session will go beyond the basics of recording a voice with your built in audio program. We will give an overview of the various types of audio recording equipment and techniques of non-linear audio editing. This should help you in creating advanced productions such as multi-voice dramatizations, music recording and mixing, as well as carry over into video production.
This session will cover: mixing board types and interfaces; microphone types; non-linear audio editing and effects (cut, shift, cross fade, noise reduction, compression, noise gating); multi-track mixing and recording different audio resources.
Products we discussed during the recording:

The book that Dan mentions during the discussion is Modern Recording Techniques, Sixth Edition.
The midi controller I mention is the Korg nanoKontrol. Apparently they changed pricing, or I just got a great deal because they are $60 which is almost twice what I had thought. Still, I think itrsquo;s well worth it
There is some discussion on the Zoom H2 and Zoom H4
Thomas mentions his use ofnbsp; a M-Audio MicroTrack II

From the Balticon program:
There are a lot of tutorials, presentations, and classes on how to record a podcast but when it gets to posting and sharing your cast, things seem to get glossed over. There are many components working in concert to make a podcast feed. This session aims to explain what each of those components are and how they function together. Further, we hope to show you how you can save money by picking and choosing what services provide each piece.
This session will cover: choosing a hosting provider, choosing blog/podcast software; tagging mp3s; writing show notes; uploading files to a host; posting an episode; feed creation; and finally statistics/tracking.</itunes:summary>

ldquo;Buggerit, I donrsquo;t have time for this, rdquo; Joe muttered. The stable waiting for the small herd of cloned spidercows cluttering up the north paddock was still knee-deep in manure, and the tractor seat wasnrsquo;t getting any warmer while he shivered out here waiting for Maddie to come and sort this thing out. It wasnrsquo;t a big herd, but it was as big as his land and his labour could manage ndash; the big biofabricator in the shed could assemble mammalian livestock faster than he could feed them up and sell them with an honest HAND-RAISED NOT VAT-GROWN label.
ldquo; What do you want with us?rdquo; he yelled up at the gently buzzing farm.
ldquo;Brains, fresh brains for baby Jesus, rdquo; crooned the farm in a warm contralto, startling Joe half out of his skin. ldquo;Buy my brains!rdquo; Half a dozen disturbing cauliflower shapes poked suggestively out of the farmsrsquo; back then retracted again, coyly.
ldquo;Donrsquo;t want no brains around here,rdquo; Joe said stubbornly, his fingers whitening on the stock of the shotgun. ldquo;Donrsquo;t want your kind round here, neither. Go away.rdquo;
Rated PG for strong language, chemical violence, and drug-abusing dogs.

Recorded live at Balticon! Withnbsp;Patrick E. McLean, a bottle of Macallan 12-year-old scotch, nbsp;Bill DeSmedt, nbsp;Sheila Dee andnbsp;P.G. Holyfield. Itrsquo;s long. Itrsquo;s wild. Kinda like me.
Choice Bits

	Apologies for last weekrsquo;s show
But there will be no fellatio
I jotted down show notes, but Irsquo;m not too sure I can read them
	Ding
Evo ate a baby on the plane
What strange shit can you say right now?
Is there a chemist in the room?
You may put your mouth all over my scotch
Now Irsquo;m just the fucking errand boy
	Tommy Chongrsquo;s Waffle House
	Irsquo;m a dick
Phil Rossi was banned from this show two years ago
It means ldquo;nice assrdquo; in Lat
	ldquo;How are you living a littlerdquo;
I wanna fuck you like a chemist
I canrsquo;t deal with anything that ends in ldquo;Zrdquo;. Like the alphabet?
The opposite of ding sounds racist, so Irsquo;m not gonna say it
	Shut up, itrsquo;s my show
Irsquo;m sorry, four and five didnrsquo;t make it
The good news is; I donrsquo;t care
Holy shit I need some more field scotch
	Science Thriction?
Just looking for a reason to hate
	But now the bitch cleans
Has anyone in the audience done an alcohol enema?
	Ding.

Quoting the original show notes:

On Memorial Day Weekend 2009, it was my privilege to present an all-new Metamor City audio drama to a live audience at Balticon 43. With a full cast, music and sound effects, and a script explicitly written for audio play, this was one of the most ambitious things Irsquo;ve done to date mdash; and one of the most fun. Listen as Janus Starson interrogates Ms Fallon about her apparent murder of a celestial child hellip; and Kathryn Kitaen tries to decide whether to defend her friendrsquo;s actions.
The Cast:
Janus Starson -nbsp;Chris LesterIsri Fallon -nbsp;Kim FortunerKathryn Kitaen -nbsp;Heather WelliverDavid Silverleaf -nbsp;Chooch SchubertBreialyn -nbsp;Sara LloydHotel Manager #1 -nbsp;Marc ldquo;Grailwolfrdquo; BaileyHotel Manager #2 -nbsp;Steve EleyHotel Manager #3 -nbsp;Viv Schubertand featuringnbsp;Rob the Sound Engineer as Himself
The audio has been balanced, within the limits of the recording equipment, but it otherwise has not been edited; yoursquo;ll hear it as it happened, right down to the snarky comments from the audience.nbsp; A question-and-answer period follows the drama, though sadly some of the information contained therein is now out-of-date.
Some music was provided through agreement withnbsp;Meviorsquo;s Music Alley. Other music courtesy ofnbsp;David Beard andnbsp;Digital Juice.

In the intro a heart felt thank you to my good friend, nbsp;Chris Miller, for his support and advice without which my recent experience at Balticon would not have been anywhere near as phenomenal.
There is no listener feedback this week.nbsp; There is also no hacker word of the week due to the length of the feature.
The feature this week is the recording of the Peer Media vs. Broadcast Media panel at Balticon 43.nbsp; I was joined bynbsp;Earl Newton, nbsp;Dave Slusher andnbsp;Patrick McLean all of whom I owe a debt of gratitude for this great discussion.nbsp; For clarification, the book Patrick mentions is ldquo;Against Intellectual Monopolyrdquo; by Michele Boldrin and David Levine.nbsp; Patrick also sent me a link tonbsp;an interview with Boldrin which led me to the web site, nbsp;Against Monopoly, which furthers the discussion with contributions from several other scholars.

Paul proposes a project: Make NASA Interesting!
Take public domain footage (which is all of it) from NASA TV and do your own color commentary. NASA TV should be awesome, but it puts you to sleep. The science is incredible, but the presentation needs work. Think of what a sports color commentator could do to a live rocket launch.

<itunes:summary>This episodersquo;s intro from Jon "The Vicar" Stallard, host ofnbsp;Geek Radio Daily.

Jeri Smith-Readynbsp;reads excerpts from her new vampire novel, nbsp;Wicked Game
.nbsp;

Book Blurb:
Recovering con artist Ciara Griffin is trying to live the straight life, even if it means finding a (shudder!) real job. She takes an internship at a local radio station, whose late-night time-warp format features 1940s blues, 60s psychedelia, 80s Goth, and more, all with an uncannily authentic flair. Ciara soon discovers how the DJs maintain their cred: theyrsquo;re vampires, stuck forever in the eras in which they were turned.

Ciararsquo;s first instinct, as always, is to cut and run. But communications giant Skywave wants to buy WMMP and turn it into just another hit-playing clone. Without the stationmdash;and the link it provides to their original Life Timesmdash;the vampires would ldquo;fade, rdquo; becoming little more than mindless ghosts of the past. Suddenly a routine corporate takeover becomes a matter of life and un-death.

To boost ratings and save the lives of her strange new friends, Ciara re-brands the station as ldquo;WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock rsquo;nrsquo; Roll.rdquo; In the ultimate con, she hides the DJsrsquo; vampire nature in plain sight, disguising the bloody truth as a marketing gimmick. WVMP becomes the hottest thing aroundmdash;next to Ciararsquo;s complicated affair with grunge vamp Shane McAllister. But the ldquo;gimmickrdquo; enrages a posse of ancient and powerful vampires who arenrsquo;t so eager to be brought into the light. Soon the stakes are higher-and the perils graver-than any con game Ciararsquo;s ever playedhellip;

<itunes:summary>This episode's intro from Thomas "Commandline" Gideon, host of The Commandline Podcast.

Walter Jon Williams reads excerpts from his new cyberpunk novel, Implied Spaces. This is one of the best stories we've ever had the pleasure of presenting.

Book Blurb:
Aristide, a semi-retired computer scientist turned swordsman, is a scholar of the implied spaces, seeking meaning amid the accidents of architecture in a universe where reality itself has been sculpted and designed by superhuman machine intelligence. While exploring the pre-technological world Midgarth, one of four dozen pocket universes created within a series of vast, orbital matrioshka computer arrays, Aristide uncovers a fiendish plot threatening to set off a nightmare scenario, perhaps even bringing about the ultimate Existential Crisis: the end of civilization itself. Traveling the pocket universes with his wormhole-edged sword Tecmesssa in hand and talking cat Bitsy, avatar of the planet-sized computer Endora, at his side, Aristide must find a way to save the multiverse from subversion, sabotage, and certain destruction.

We talked music, friendship, and sci-fi. And best of all, they sang me a song. Urban Tapestry's music can be found at one of my favorite music sites, CD Baby. You can go to CD Baby now and preview music from their albums Sushi and High Tea, and Myths and Urban Legends.

<itunes:summary>This week we present an interview with Balticon 42 Art Guest of Honor, John Jude Palencar. Mr. Palencar is a world famous artist and illustrator who has been winning awards for his distinctive style of art for over two decades. He is known mostly for his book covers, which have appeared on hundreds of books in over thirty countries. He has done cover art for renowned authors such as HP Lovecraft, Ursula LeGuin, Marrion Zimmer Bradley, Octavia Butler, and many many more.

Most recently his cover paintings for Eragon and Eldest, by Christopher Paolini, has appeared on the New York Times children's best seller list for the past year. John's work made such an impact on the author that he named Eragon's birthplace acirc;euro;oelig;Palencar Valleyacirc;euro;.

Mr. Palencar also enjoys an on-going artist-in-residence program in Country Kerry, Ireland. His paintings were included in a special exhibit entitled, acirc;euro;oelig;Images of Irelandacirc;euro;, held at the National Museum in Dublin.

Getting started in art is tough

	There isn't enough horror

	Horror started it all

<itunes:summary>Mur Lafferty has released her novel Playing for Keeps for free as a PDF.

A free book? There's no such thing as a free book! What's the catch?

No catch. It's free. But, Mur asks that if you like it you purchase it from Amazon.com on August 25. She's making a run on Amazon and really needs us all to pitch in and help her get noticed. She, like so many others, has a book contract now. But podcasting novels are still a new medium for delivery and we need to show the publishing industry that this makes a difference.

Martha and I have read the PDF version multiple time. We help Mur by making the PDFs and doing layout and formatting. We also did a little editing. All of this was to help Mur make the best product possible. We bought the first version of Playing for Keeps when it was self-published on Lulu.com. And now we're joining her for her run on Amazon and we'll be buying multiple copies of Playing for Keeps as published by Swarm Press.

Mur has delivered countless hours of enjoyment and encouragement to the pod-o-sphere. She has also inspired and rallied people including me. It is not an exaggeration to say that if Mur wasn't here I wouldn't be either. I wonder how many other people to whom you listen, read, and watch are here because they were inspired by Mur Lafferty. I'm guessing the number is larger than you think.

So be ready to place your order from Amazon.com for Playing for Keeps on Monday August 25. Be there! Aloha.

Tee Morris is the author of the novels Morevi: The Chronicles of Raif and Askana and The Case of the Singing Sword: A Billibub Baddings Mystery. He is also the co-author of the non-fiction works Podcasting for Dummies and Expert Podcasting Practices for Dummies. He has podcasts for the above mention fiction as well as a companion podcast for the Dummies books.

Philippa Ballantine is the author of the novels Weaver's Web and Chasing the Bard. These novels are also available as podcasts. Her free PDF novel is Digital Magic, the follow up to Chasing the Bard.

Tee's free PDF novel is The Case of the Pitcher's Pendant: A Billibub Baddings Mystery. If you couldn't tell by the title this is the second in his Billi Baddings series.

Both authors say that these books can be read and enjoyed without having read the earlier novels. We hope you enjoy them too.

Please join Tee and Philippa as they make their run on the Amazon.com charts on Aug 8, 2008. If you enjoy Pitcher's Pendant and Digital Magic, please support the authors by buying their books from Amazon.com on 8/8/08. They need your help to show the publishing world that podcast listeners matter. This is your chance to show the world what we can do.

<itunes:summary>This episode is awesome. We talked with Matthew Wayne Selznick (WMS) at Balticon 41, back in May 2007, and we talk to him again in July 2008 to update the interview and discuss his Sovereign Summer Sunday, July 13, 2008. In fact, it's an all MWS Balticon Podcast episode with a promo and music by Matt as well.
Matt's book, Brave Men Run, will be released by Swarm Press on Sunday July 13, 2008.
Check Matt's blog for more info on his Sovereign Summer Sunday event!
Updates: Matt wants me to let you know some things we didn't cover in the updates. He no longer offers web hosting and all his podcasts have been collapsed into one called Sonitotum. It is the companion podcast to his blog, Scribtotum.
