BC45.104 – George Hrab Science Lecture

George Hrab talks about the many many many ways we know that the world is older than 6,000.

In case you’re wondering why this is important, there is a minority of religious people in the USA who believe in a “Young Earth” creationist theory. If you ever need to try to persuade one of these people that the are wrong, you’ll get a lot of good solid scientific information from this talk.

This is the first in a series of science lectures. We’ve cooked up a cool new intro to these science talks. The folks in order of appearance are: Evo Terra & Sheila Dee, Donna “Ms. Information”Mugavero, Jared Axelrod, and George Hrab. The music comes curtesy of the great and powerful John Taylor Williams. Many thanks to them all for their willingness to assist in this project.

BC43.98 – Mark Van Name – 2008 Compton Crook Award Winner

Greetings Listeners,

This week we have another great Punkie intro as we bring you a blast from the past. This is our 2009 interview with author Mark Van Name. Mark is the author of a whole bunch of books, including my favorite, One Jump Ahead. Mark was the 2008 Compton Crook Award winner and spoke to me at Balticon 43. We discussed the craft of writing and much, much more.

He also has an excellent Zombie plan which relies heavily on my favorite military SF author, David Drake.

We also have a promo for Conglomeration 2011, an upcoming SF&F convention in Louisville, KY.

And don’t forget that there’s still time to enter our contest for a free copy of George Hrab’s Trebuchet.

BC44.97 – Social Media for the Midlist Author

Back in April I ran into author L. Jagi Lamplighter at Ravencon. She wanted to pick my brain about the best way to enter social media and the best places to spend her time. As a mom with a passel of kids she doesn’t have a lot of free time, but she wants to build her audience without wasting time. Always on the lookout for ground breaking panel ideas, I immediately added this one to the list of panels for Balticon 44 and stocked it with the best new media ho’s in my stable.

Please enjoy as you get schooled in the best new media practices by the best of the best in the field: Tee Morris, Philippa Balantine, Nathan Lowell, and Dave Slusher moderating. Also appearing in this panel are Allison Duncan and Paulette Jaxton.

This week is also the inaugural intro by the one and only Vivid Muse. There is not much that I can say about Viv, other than she it the picture in the dictionary next to the word “awesome”. I am elated to have her on board helping to write and record intros. She is the hostess with the mostess. If you don’t believe me check this out.

BC44.96 – Paolo Bacigalupi – 2010 Compton Crook Award Winner

Punkie is back to intro this episode in which Paul interviews the award dominator himself, Paolo Bacigalupi. Paolo has won just about every award SF&F has to offer and the one’s he didn’t win he’s making room for on his bookshelf. Among these awards is BSFS’s own Compton Crook award which he won for The Windup Girl. If you love dystopia, you’ll love this book. Think of a world where gene modification has gone mad, and your right to grow and eat food is comes second to a corporation’s rights and patents on the seeds you’re growing. Don’t pay your licensing fees, then you don’t eat. This is the backdrop for one excellent and very well written tale.

But don’t take our word for it. Listen to the interview and hear it direct from the author’s mouth.
